What’s an “idiot plot”?

The idiot plot structures stories that move forward because every problem encountered would be solved instantly, or not even exist, if all the characters weren’t idiots.

The only things preventing any sort of resolution are the character’s refusal to engage with, or complete obliviousness to any conflict, even if it’s blindingly obvious to the reader. The characters are “idiots” in that they are too unaware to understand and resolve the conflict immediately.
